This year’s flu season has been one of the most severe in the past few years. According to the CDC, “The flu virus is one of the most changeable viruses we know, and it’s subtly different every single year,” says Dr. Paul Biddinger, director of the Center for Disaster Medicine and vice-chairman for emergency preparedness at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston. “We have to change the vaccine every year to try and match the strains we’re guessing will be dominant. The more closely the vaccine matches the dominant strain that’s out there, the less severe the season, because fewer people get the flu.” (Heaney, 2018).

With this in mind, the flu season is something that we have to prepare for each year. Knowing that the flu is one virus that once one individual has been diagnosed, it spreads throughout your facility at a rapid rate. And knowing that the flu season is so difficult on the elderly, ensuring that every resident within the facility has obtained their flu shot for the current year is extremely important. So, how is your facility preparing for the 2018-2019 flu season?

You may be asking yourself, why do I need to start thinking about the upcoming flu season right now? The manufacturers of the flu vaccine have already produced and have begun to market the 2018-2019 vaccinations. They’ve indicated that if you do not pre-order by June 1st, you will not receive your vaccines until after the first of November. This could drastically effect the health of your residents. The longer that you wait for your residents to become vaccinated, the higher risk one of your residents will be diagnosed with the flu prior to receiving their flu vaccine.

At GrandView Pharmacy, we believe in helping our customers prepare far in advance of the upcoming flu season and begin the process of planning December flu clinics now. Planning ahead helps our customers have everything they need to provide the greatest care for their residents.
